Heat, humidity & storms ahead for the Heartland

Hot weather will continue in much of the West into the weekend, followed by a marked cooling trend. Meanwhile, most of the central and eastern U.S. will experience a continuation, or gradual return, of near- or above-normal temperatures.

During the next couple of days, showery weather across the South could lead to 1- to 3-inch rainfall totals from coastal Texas to Georgia and parts of the Carolinas. Late in the week, a cold front crossing the North could result in scattered 1- to 2-inch amounts from the northern Plains into the Northeast. In contrast, mostly dry weather will prevail during the next 5 days from California to the southern High Plains.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures from the Plains eastward, while cooler-than-normal conditions will cover much of the West.

Meanwhile, near- to above-normal rainfall across most of the country should contrast with drier-than-normal weather in coastal Texas, portions of the southern High Plains and the Southwest, and from the upper Great Lakes region into New England.
