Quiet, comfortable weather across the Heartland
Across the Corn Belt, cool, mostly dry weather prevails. However, a few showers are occurring in Iowa and environs, continuing a recent trend toward wetter conditions in parts of the western Corn Belt.
On the Plains, isolated showers are occurring in several areas. However, hot weather on the drought-stricken northern High Plains contrasts with generally cool conditions farther south and east.
In the South, Hurricane Harvey is bearing down on the middle and lower Texas coast. At 7 am Friday CDT, Harvey was centered 140 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, moving northwestward at 10 mph. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 110 mph. All rice and cotton harvesting has ended in the western Gulf Coast region.
In the West, mostly dry weather accompanies late-season heat, favoring fieldwork and crop maturation.
