The season’s coldest air on the move

On the Plains, a snow cover remains in place across much of Montana and the Dakotas, where Wednesday morning’s temperatures largely plunged below 0°. Cold weather has also invaded the central and southern Plains, where pockets of drought and temperature extremes have maintained stress on poorly established winter wheat.

Across the Corn Belt, the coldest air of the season is arriving on gusty winds, resulting in very low wind-chill temperatures. Widespread sub-zero temperatures were noted Wednesday morning across the northern Corn Belt. In addition, snow squalls in the vicinity of the Great Lakes are causing local travel disruptions.

In the South, rain showers linger in the southern Atlantic region. Cooler air is arriving, but warmth lingers along and near the Gulf Coast. Southeastern drought recovery continues in the wake of recent showers, but more precipitation is needed to eradicate the effects of summer and autumn rainfall deficits.

In the West, a band of heavy precipitation is spreading inland across northern California and southwestern Oregon. Meanwhile, snow is developing across the northern Intermountain West. A sharp temperature contrast exists, with warmth in California and the Southwest and very cold conditions in the Northwest.
