Conservation assistance available to Michigan farmers
Michigan farmers have until December 18th to apply for environmental incentive funding with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Michigan State Conservationist Garry Lee tells Brownfield the Environmental Quality Incentives program in Michigan has set aside $500,000 of financial assistance for farmers working toward verification with the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP).
“Farmers who are eligible have gone through the assessment process for at least one of the MAEAP verification systems like livestock, cropping or farmstead.” He says, “The producers must also have a verification action plan, indicating that the operation needs only one or two practices to become MAEAP verified.”
Lee says the funds support 20 different conservation practices. “Most of the financial assistance is used for practices related to the handling and storage of fuel and agri-chemicals, water well decommission is also a popular practice.”
He tells Brownfield NRCS in Michigan has provided over $3.5 million in the last four years to help farmers become MAEAP verified.
