A record number of awards will be given at this week’s 90th Illinois FFA State Convention in Springfield.

More than 500 state FFA degrees will be presented along with the recommendation of 139 American FFA degrees, which are the highest numbers Illinois FFA has ever had.

Illinois FFA Executive Director, Mindy Bunselmeyer, tells Brownfield Ag News they are excited about this years’ convention and service project, “Our service project is called the Crayon Initiative and it is a non-profit organization based out of California and they recycle and repurpose broken crayons and they make them into crayon boxes that they donate then to Children’s hospitals all throughout the United States.”

Bunselmeyer expects more than 5,000 pounds of crayons to be recycled from their efforts. The opening ceremony is Tuesday afternoon, with the election of the 2018-2019 Illinois state FFA officers on Thursday.
