4-H Week refreshes enrollments

A state 4-H leader says National 4-H Week reinvigorates students and volunteers for a year of learning.

Julie Chapin, head of Michigan 4-H, tells Brownfield the fall marks the enrollment period for youth.

“For each of more than county fairs, that’s our opportunity to highlight the learning kids have done in a year, but the projects are where young people get to try on new skills, explore new interest areas, learn those life skills,” she says.

She says the organization encourages hands-on experiences.

“We see a lot of interest right now in some of the work we’re doing in science education, science technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. We use a STEAM acronym as opposed to STEM,” she shares.

Chapin says recognition activities are planned across local communities, states, and at the national level as part of this week.
