A suite of approaches to reduce nitrogen loss

A crop science professor says it will take a variety of approaches to effectively reduce nitrogen loss.

Dr. Laura Christianson with the University of Illinois recently conducted a comprehensive analysis on nutrient reduction strategies.

“Every practice is so different, and different practices will work for different farmers for different reasons.”

She says while no single practice will be suitable for every acre, every single acre needs at least one new conservation practice.

Christianson tells Brownfield nitrogen management is a good place to start.

“And applying that nitrogen differently.  Maybe in the spring rather than the fall, or reducing your application rate to the university-recommended maximum return-to-nitrogen-rate.”

Other methods examined were cover crops, bioreactors, and buffers.
