Anuvia works to build soil health and fertility

A new bio-based fertilizer company says their slow-release technology can help farmers reduce their impact on the environment while providing crops nutrition when they need it.

Anuvia Plant Nutrients’ Hugh MacGillivray tells Brownfield their products offer farmers the combined benefits of compost, manure and commercial fertilizer and nutrients better adhere to soils.

“We say about a 50 percent reduction of nitrogen leaching versus urea and about a 40 percent reduction versus ammonia sulfate.”

He says the manufacturing process also produces fewer greenhouse gases than traditional fertilizers which translates to about a 10 percent reduction for corn acres and more for other crops.

“We get about 50 percent of the reduction in greenhouse gases coming from the manufacturing and then about 50 percent comes from use efficiency.”

MacGillivray says land grant university and private research trials have found yield advantages as well as soil improvements from the increased microbe activity.
