Arla Foods seeks mergers with German & UK cooperatives

Denmark-based Arla Foods has announced plans to merge with Milk Link cooperative in the United Kingdom and Germany’s Milch-Union Hocheifel (MUH). The deal will be presented to the cooperatives’ membership for a vote on June 26th. If the Milk Link deal is approved, it would create the largest dairy group in the U.K. controlling about 25 percent of the nation’s milk production. The MUH deal would create the third-largest dairy in Germany.

The final deals would also need approval by the European Union. Together the three cooperatives had sales of $10.8 billion (US) in 2011. Cooperative membership would grow to 12,300 in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the U.K.
