ASA president: China, other key markets continuing to buy US soybeans

The president of the American Soybean Association says growers are optimistic about the future of soybean exports.

Scott Metzger says China coming back into the market is a key reason.

“I think right now they are about 14 million metric tons on their 25 million ton commitment.”

He tells Brownfield China is on track to reach its 25 million metric ton agreement with the US.

However, “If they don’t meet them, there’s actually nothing in place that actually holds them accountable for it. Then that takes us back to tariffs and all that stuff. We don’t want to go back down that path again.”

Metzger says the industry isn’t depending on China alone.

“Mexico is our number two buyer behind China. It’s good to see them staying in the market,” he said. “All the other countries we’re exporting to, last year they were all increased from the previous year.”

He says international trade has been a bright spot for the industry in 2026. Metzger spoke to Brownfield at the 2026 Farm Progress Show.
