ASF continues to impact Poland, EU, and the global markets

African swine fever continues to cause disruptions to the global pork market.  The USDA’s Foreign Ag Service says Poland’s swine inventories dropped 4 percent in 2019 and attributes much of the contraction due to the ongoing battle with the disease.  The agency says production will remain under pressure in 2020 as the disease continues to spread in the country’s eastern and central regions and in western Poland near the German border.  ASF was recently found in a wild boar in Poland just 12 kilometers from Germany.

Poland exports about $1 billion worth of pork onto the global market and has been one of the fastest-growing pork exporters in recent years.

Germany ranks 2nd on the global market for pork exports, behind the US, and is currently one of the largest exporters of pork to China.
