BASF expands U.S. dicamba production

BASF’s new dicamba production plant in Beaumont, Texas

BASF is expanding its production of dicamba in anticipation of growing demand for its new Engenia herbicide product.

An expansion of BASF’s production facility in Beaumont, Texas will allow the company to increase its dicamba output by more than 50 percent.

Paul Rea, senior vice president of crop protection with BASF, says the weed management challenges faced by farmers continue to grow.

“Just from 2005 through 2015, there were 120 weed species, which grew to 155 in that timeframe, that are exhibiting some level of weed resistance,” Rea says. “More specifically, weed species that exhibit resistance to glyphosate resistance increased from ten species to 35, a significant increase over a ten-year period.”

Dicamba is the active ingredient in Engenia, which received EPA approval in December. It is one of three new dicamba herbicides on the market for 2017.
