Basis pulling from a different direction in southeastern Minnesota

Basis levels in parts of the northern Corn Belt look quite different compared to a year ago.

Southeast Minnesota farmer Bruce Peterson says the better bids now are to the south, whereas last year the demand for corn was stronger on rail going to Nebraska and Kansas.

“Because they had a short crop the year before. Now the short crop is kind of in that northeast corridor of Iowa (where there’s heavy demand) combined with maybe a little shorter crop. Then as you get into the southern tier counties of Minnesota, the crop was unfortunately hurt too.”

Peterson grows corn and soybeans near Northfield.
