Bayer agronomist discusses potential impacts of extreme heat wave

A technical agronomist says this week’s severe heat wave could significantly increase crop stress.

“Corn specifically, we start getting above that 92 degrees and factor in potential dry conditions depending where you are, it can start impacting photosynthesis and overall productivity,” said Andrew Penney with Bayer Crop Science.

He tells Brownfield producers could see yield impacts. “Whether it’s too hot of temperatures that impacts photosynthesis or lack of moisture, that can definitely impact kernel weight. And so, anytime we’re reducing kernel weight, that can lead to yield decrease.”

The National Weather Service says temperatures will range from the upper 90s to low 100s across the Corn Belt through Friday.

Penney spoke to Brownfield at a Bayer Crop Science field event near Atlantic, Iowa on Tuesday, July 25th.
