A big bump in Indiana’s corn crop

Last year, the projected yield for Indiana’s corn crop along the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour was an abysmal 113 bu per acres.

As of right now – 2013 looks to be a different story.  Brian Grete heads up the Eastern leg of the tour.  He says, “Our yield came in at 167.36, up 47.8% from a year ago,” he says.  “Once again it is going to be up huge from a year ago because of the drought situation.  But, it’s up 18.6% on the three-year average.”

Grete tells Brownfield moisture – or the lack thereof – is a big concern.  “I think moisture will determine how much kernel abortion there is on the tips of the ears,” he says.  “If we get timely rains – the corn should be able to hold on and plump up those kernels and add dry matter and weight.”

If the crop doesn’t get some rain – and soon – he says it will likely take a big step back.
