Biodiesel industry benefits livestock producers

Livestock producers are benefiting from the growing biodiesel industry.

David Walton raises corn, soybeans, cattle, and sheep in Eastern Iowa.

He says the biodiesel industry has not only increased the demand for soybean oil but has also lowered the cost of soybean meal used in animal feed for livestock and poultry.

“It lowers the cost of soybean meal between $20-$40 a ton depending on which report you read,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he hopes more farmers will continue to get involved in the biodiesel industry.

“We’d like the support of the farmers and the people who are using diesel to switch over to biodiesel,” he says. “It’s good for the equipment, it’s good for the environment, and it’s also using your own product which is the right thing to do.”

Walton is currently serving as a director of the Iowa Soybean Association.
