BSE cow identified in Germany

German officials reportedly have identified a cow with BSE, the first case since 2009 in that country.

A report in Food Safety News says the cow was killed and destroyed and that none of the meat entered the human food chain. Because it was 10 years old, the cow was tested for BSE upon slaughter for consumption. It tested for the L-type of BSE which can develop spontaneously in older cattle.

Seven offspring were traced to the cow – five had already been slaughtered. The remaining two were also killed.
