Canada funds FMD disease bank

The government of Canada has committed to creating a vaccine bank for Foot and Mouth Disease.

The Federal, Provincial, and Territorial Ministers of Agriculture recently committed 57.5 million dollars over five years for animal disease outbreaks, with 5.6 million of that dedicated to establishing an FMD vaccine bank and the development of FMD response plans.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency will launch a competitive procurement process to establish the vaccine bank this fall.

Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Marie-Claude Bibeau says the creation of a vaccine bank for Foot and Mouth Disease means that during a potential outbreak, it gives Canada the ability to reduce the duration and spread by half.
