We made more cheese in April

Cheese production in the U.S. in April totaled 950 million pounds, 2.2 percent above April of last year. Italian type production increased 5.2 percent to 414 million pounds while American-type cheese was up slightly from a year ago at 377 million pounds.

Wisconsin cheese production in April totaled 241 million pounds down 0.3 percent from April of last year. American type cheese production declined 8.5 percent with cheddar output down 11.7 percent. Italian type cheese production was 3.1 percent higher than a year ago.

California cheese production in April totaled 203.5 million pounds up 6.2 percent from a year ago. American type cheese production was down 0.3 percent although cheddar output increased 12.6 percent. Italian type cheese production was 11.1 percent higher than a year ago.

Butter production in April totaled 158 million pounds, 4.9 percent below April of 2013.

Other dairy product production in April compared to a year ago:

  • Nonfat dry milk 158 million pounds (-1.2%)
  • Skim milk powders 48.8 million pounds (+22.8%)
  • Dry whey 74.5 million pounds (-12.8%)
  • Lactose 92.2 million pounds (+8.8%)
  • Whey protein concentrate 45.7 million pounds (+13%)
  • Regular ice cream 68.5 million gallons (-5.1%)
  • Low fat ice cream 38.9 million gallons (-33.6%)
  • Sherbet 3.98 million gallons (-11.8%)
  • Frozen yogurt 6.13 million gallons (-21.1%)
