Chocolate milk stays in school under Tiffany bill

Wednesday was National Chocolate Milk Day, and a Wisconsin Congressman says it was the perfect time to introduce legislation designed to prevent the Food and Drug Administration from taking chocolate and other flavored milk away from schools.

Tom Tiffany

Republican Tom Tiffany tells Brownfield the Biden Administration’s executive order is not helping provide good nutrition for children. “They don’t go through Congress, they just take an executive action, but they want to eliminate chocolate milk and other flavored milks in schools, and we’re like, that’s not appropriate.”

Tiffany says taking away flavored milk would drastically reduce milk consumption by children who need the dairy nutrients. “The American Dietetic Association (now called the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), they said they would probably be like 50-60 percent less kids that would drink milk as a result of that in our schools.”

The Congressman says his bill defunds FDA’s bad policy. “What my resolution does is it does not allow any funding for the Biden Administration to implement a program that eliminates chocolate milk in schools.”

Tiffany says it’s better for children to drink flavored milk than no milk at all.  The House of Representatives approved Tiffany’s bill on a voice vote, and he’s hopeful it can be included in the final appropriations bill.

The legislation is H.R. 3930, and called the Milk is Indisputably Liked by Kids (MILK) Act of 2023 and the text of the bill can be found here.
