Colorado GMO labeling defeated; Oregon’s measure trails

voting8Voters in Colorado have rejected a GMO labeling initiative—and a similar initiative in Oregon appears headed for defeat.

The Colorado measure was defeated 68 to 32 percent.  As of 6:30 Wednesday morning, Oregon’s labeling initiative was losing 51 to 49 percent with 86 percent of the votes counted.

Both initiatives would have required labeling of foods made with geneticially modified ingredients.

In Maui County, Hawaii, voters narrowly approved a measure temporarily banning the cultivation of genetically engineered crops. The moratorium will be in place until the county council reviews safety studies on growing the crops.

Seed companies Monsanto and Dow/Mycogen have winter breeding programs in Maui County and funded advertising opposing the ban.
