Companies join up to make fertilizer more efficient

Biotech company Novozymes and Anuvia Plant Nutrients are working together to develop bionutrients, microorganisms that benefit plants, to improve crop growth using less synthetic fertilizer.

Anuvia Chief Commercial Officer Hugh MacGillivray tells Brownfield the technology will make farming more efficient.

“It’s doubling the nutrition load of a product,” he said. “That means half as many pounds have to be applied to the acre to deliver that same amount of nutrition; less handling, less stops with the planter, less stops with the applicator.”

He said by replacing a portion of the nitrogen and phosphate applied, farmers will save on cost and limit nutrient runoff.

“We will actually reduce the footprint of nutrition lost into the environment through this strategy, no doubt,” MacGillivray said.

Anuvia said products could be available as early as next year.
