Conaway key to getting Farm Bill done on time

House Ag Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson says getting the farm bill done on time rests in the hands of his Committee’s chairman.

Peterson, a Democrat from Minnesota, tells Brownfield Texas Republican Mike Conaway is outnumbered as both lawmakers participate in the conference committee process.

“I support what the Senate is doing, he doesn’t.  So there’s three against one.  And the question is, either he’s going to come our way or there’s not going to be a bill.”

During House farm bill negotiations, Peterson says Conaway took a “my way or the highway” approach to added work requirements in the nutrition title.

“That doesn’t work.  So it’s in his court.  And I think the best we can do is give him some window-dressing so he can go back and say he got something that really isn’t real.”

Besides differences on SNAP, Peterson says partisan division on conservation could also impede committee efforts to get the 2018 Farm Bill finalized before the current bill expires September 30th.
