A continued push for Immigration Reform

Indiana Professional Dairy Producers and the Indiana Farm Bureau are urging Indiana’s Congressional delegation to support immigration reform.  Doug Leman, executive director for the IPDP says the immigration system is broken.  “We hope we can bring it to attention to our legislators that this isn’t just a political issue,” he says. “It’s a real issue that needs fixed.”

Leman tells Brownfield further delaying immigration reform could affect Indiana’s dairy producers.  “We need to have workers here that are year-round,” he says.  “We train workers to do jobs on dairy and livestock farms that are 7 days a week and 365 days a year.  We need the labor.  I like to say – would we rather import our labor or our food.”

IPDP and IFB suggest that any immigration bill should include a new ag guest worker visa program that is more efficient and market-based and must include provisions that deal with the reality that many of the current hired workers on farms are unauthorized to work in the US.
