Debate continues over off-target movement of dicamba

The debate over off-target movement of dicamba herbicides has heated up again following EPA’s decision to re-register those products.

But Bayer spokesman Ryan Rubischko tells Brownfield if applicators follow the label, volatility and drift should not be a problem.

“Things like volatility still remain low when farmers and applicators are utilizing the technology as outlined on the label,” Rubischko says.

Bayer opposes the establishment of cut-off dates for applying dicamba. Rubischko says farmers need to be able to spay dicamba as an early post-application.

“We know those early post-applications, getting weeds when they’re small, is most effective in terms of weed control—and this new label continues to provide the ability for farmers and applicators to do just that.”

Some state Extension weed scientists say new application restrictions from EPA don’t go far enough in addressing the volatility issue.
