Details could make all the difference when handling grain this fall

An extension grain handling specialist says the details will really matter this fall.

Dr. Charles Hurburgh at Iowa State University says crops are probably going to be harvested wetter than normal because of delayed planting this spring.

“Therefore, we will get variability in the wetter ground versus the higher, sandier soils. We’ll have in-field variability, there’s no doubt about that.”

He tells Brownfield grain dryers won’t completely even out moisture, but dryers that mix the grain are more effective.

Hurburgh says storage management will be at a premium.

“And more than that, it will make the management right at harvest critical because we don’t want to use up anymore of the storage life than is absolutely necessary.”

To that end, he cautions farmers not to hold wet grain in storage wagons for more than two days, and Hurburgh emphasizes monitoring bin temperatures to prevent spoilage.
