Economy enjoys boost from pet, animal feeds

A recently completed study says the U.S. animal feed manufacturing industry lays down a significant economic footprint.

“Nationally, it’s about $297 billion of economic impact,” said John Stewart, with the American Feed Industry Association.  That, said Stewart, includes animal feed and pet food ingredients, transportation and suppliers.  The study – using 2016 data – indicates that animal feed and pet foods account for 944,000 U.S. jobs.

For many communities, feed or pet food plants provide employment where there might not be much else, said Stewart.

“That whole spectrum of industry and all of the things that surround getting that product from feed mill or an animal food plant into or in front of an animal,” he said.

Stewart spoke to Brownfield at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting Washington Watch event in Washington D.C.
