Expanding markets for US pork

US hog inventories are at record levels and a Minnesota pork producer says growing demand for US pork is a necessity.  Singapore and Vietnam are two countries in the Asian market the US pork industry is targeting.

Randy Spronk says Vietnam has the potential to become as important for US pork as South Korea has been.  “South Korea is dramatically up with a lot of picnics and butts,” he says.  “Multiple times over the importers have talked about the volatility in pricing.  That’s the important thing we’ve been telling them about – is the value proposition that we have with pork products that come out of the United States and the opportunity to be able to go in and supplement what they’re raising domestically.”

And, he says, the culinary scene in Singapore makes it a prime export destination for US pork.

Growing demand for US pork internationally helps to move it off a domestic market that is already saturated.
