Farmer’s broken levee leads to prevent plant

A central Missouri farmer has been able to plant corn on his hills and is almost done with soybeans but his Missouri River bottom ground is about six feet under water, “Our levee did breach last week so we don’t know at this time how bad of a hold it is but we do know there’s a hole there,’ says Robert Alpers who farms near Prairie Home, Missouri.

He says he will take some prevent plant on corn, “We’ve got one field down that we’re going to take prevented plant on. We had another one planted which, that’d just be a loss.”

Most of his acres in the bottoms were going to beans, so there’s still time, IF the water goes down in time, “We’re probably going to be looking at prevented planting on beans, also.”

Alpers says a lot of farmers in his area are facing a total loss because of flooding – and there’s more rain on the way this week.
