February precipitation above normal for Indiana

Heavy precipitation limited fieldwork during February in Indiana.

According to the USDA, average statewide precipitation was 4.5 inches, 2.5 above normal, with flooding reported in some fields, especially in the southern half of the state and most of Indiana has adequate to surplus soil moisture.

Calving is underway and livestock is generally reported to be doing well, but muddy conditions and wide-ranging temperatures have caused some stress, and hay inventory is low in some areas.

52% of winter wheat is rated good to excellent, 5% lower than a year ago, because of cold temperatures and a lack of snow cover.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress reports resume April 1st.
