Federal judge blocks California cancer label for RoundUp

A federal appeals court in California has blocked the state of California from putting a cancer warning label on its Roundup products.

The suit was filed in 2017 by a dozen ag groups and Bayer saying the California label would be a risk to the food supply chain. They cited numerous studies showing glyphosate does not cause cancer.

The judge said a cancer warning on Roundup would be misleading and is not backed up by regulatory findings.

Yet, numerous lawsuits claiming a cancer link to the product have been filed. Bayer is in out-of-court settlement talks with a number of plaintiffs.

Bayer calls it a “very important ruling for California agriculture and for science.”

Bayer’s full statement: “This is a very important ruling for California agriculture and for science as a federal court, after weighing all the facts, has concluded that the evidence does not support a cancer warning requirement for glyphosate-based products, which farmers all over the world depend on to control weeds, practice sustainable farming, and bring their products to market efficiently.”
