Fewer soybean weed, aphid problems in Wisconsin

A soybean expert says the impact of spring weather on soybeans is showing up now.  Shawn Conley with the University of Wisconsin says many farmers are looking at weed control challenges after a wet spring and not being able to get across many fields to apply herbicides.

And, Conley says he’s hearing about weed resistance problems.  “There’s a lot of complaints and issues again with glyphosate resistance popping up and I think we’re going to see more of those questions as we get into harvest time.”

He also says soybean pests appear to be worse west of the Mississippi River.  “There have been a few aphids popping up here and there, but at least in Wisconsin, we haven’t seen a lot of over-thresholds.  We’re starting to hear reports out of Minnesota where aphids may be building to the threshold level.”

Conley also encourages growers to continuously scout for white mold, which remains at a high risk throughout much of the upper Midwest.
