Four percent of Kentucky corn harvested

Harvest has kicked off in Kentucky.  Four percent of the state’s corn crop has been harvested with 40% mature and 71% rated good to excellent. 

Keith Tapp, who farms in western Kentucky says quality has been better than he expected for corn. “We’re running a little below average for corn about 180. Last year was a little over 200-220.”

He says moisture on the corn so far has been running in the mid to upper 20s.

Soybeans are rated 70% good to excellent with 8% dropping leaves and 30% coloring.  Tapp says his beans look better than his corn crop. “Not seeing a lot disease or anything. Overall, I’m optimistic about the beans coming in. I’m looking forward to seeing what they will yield.”

Tobacco 45% cut and 89% topped with 71% of the crop rated good to excellent. 

Pastures are rated 57% good to excellent. 

Topsoil is 60% and subsoil is 65% adequate to surplus.
