From Indonesia to Cambodia, dairy industry faces workforce challenges
The rising age of farmers and access to skilled labor are challenges for dairies in Asia.
Dr. Deddy Kurniawan is a dairy farmer, veterinarian, and project lead with the U.S. – Indonesia Dairy Partnership. He says 70 to 80 percent of Indonesian dairy farms are small, and those farmers are aging.
“You know, same as everywhere else. The young man doesn’t want to do it anymore because it’s small, it’s dirty, it’s hard work, big investment, and doesn’t pay enough.”
He tells Brownfield technology could help encourage younger generations.
In Cambodia, dairy farmer Ziv Sar tells Brownfield professional labor is limited.
“We don’t have any experienced people in Cambodia, and actually we need to train from milking, feed center, field crops, production line, veterinarian, all the stuff.”
Sar manages the first modern dairy farm in Cambodia, milking 1,700 cows.
