Frost damages Canadian crops

Canadian agricultural officials say the quality of their 2010 wheat crop will be negatively impacted by the crop-killing frost that swept through much of the Canadian Prairies late last week.

According to Reuters, the killing frost also hit north-central Alberta, while spreading into most of the crop-growing province of Saskatchewan.  Canadian Wheat Board chairman Allen Oberg says there’s “no doubt” that wheat quality will be affected.  He says their biggest concern is having enough number one quality wheat for their quality customers like Japan.

The frost arrived on time in western Canada, but damaged the quality of crops because many were immature and vulnerable after being planted late.  Officials say canola and oats were also affected.
