GMOs to get public attention in D.C.

Programs ICONGMO issues will be getting some added attention in Washington, DC this week.

The second public meeting of a panel reviewing the science and regulation of Genetically Engineered Crops will convene at the National Academy of Sciences.

Crop companies Monsanto and DuPont Pioneer will be there along with representatives from the USDA, EPA and FDA.

At the Intelligence Squared GMO Food debate last week in New York, Monsanto’s Rob Fraley argued in favor of the technology admitting that it’s not perfect…

“GMOs are not the Holy Grail. What they are is an important tool, if used properly, can have a huge impact in bringing remarkable new products to farmers and benefit consumers for a long time.”

Also this Wednesday, the GMO labeling bill sponsored by Representative Mike Pompeo of Kansas is up for a hearing in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s health panel. It’s backed by the food industry and would preempt state GMO labeling initiatives.
