Good time to have your well tested

Saturated soils aren’t only keeping farmers from spring planting, saturated soils are also posing a threat to rural residents who get their drinking water from wells.

“The soil is one of the really important tools that we use in rural areas to protect our ground water from contamination,” said Karen Mancl, professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University. “Once it gets saturated with water the soil loses its ability, or its ability is reduced to remove pollutants.”

Mancl tells Brownfield that because wells are most at risk right now, this is a good time to have your well water tested.

“You should test your water for bacteria, for pH, for nitrate and for total dissolved solids, those are the four things I recommend people test their well for annually.” Mancl said. “If you had to pick a time of year when your well is most threatened, it’s now.”

Mancl has more information, including publications at her Soil Environment Technology Learning website.
