Scott Gottlieb is resigning as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration effective next month.

His resignation comes as the agency continues to work on ag and food regulations.

In his resignation letter, Gottlieb said the FDA has implemented measures to improve food safety and the ability to identify and track outbreaks of foodborne illnesses during his tenure. He added he’s confident the FDA will continue to advance those efforts and more.

In a statement, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Gottlieb has been an “exemplary public health leader and passionate promoter of innovation.”

President Trump tweeted that Gottlieb has done a “terrific job” and will be greatly missed.
