Harvest progress continues in Indiana

Harvest continued to progress as more favorable weather conditions have moved in across the state.  According to the latest Crop Progress and Conditions report, 17 percent of the state’s corn crop has been harvested – well ahead of both last year and the five-year average.  Ninety-six percent of the crop has dented and 65 percent has matured.  Just 11 percent of the crop is in good to excellent condition while 68 percent of the crop is rated poor to very poor.

Soybean harvest is underway as 5 percent of the crop is now harvested and 64 percent is shedding leaves.  Twenty-eight percent of the bean crop is rated good to excellent and 39 percent rated poor to very poor.

Recent rainfalls have helped to rejuvenate the state’s soil moisture.  Fifty-three percent of the topsoil is now adequate to surplus, but 47 percent is still short to very short.  Subsoil moisture has also improved as 30 percent is now adequate to surplus while 70 percent is still called short to very short.

Pasture conditions have rebounded considerably and 15 percent is called good to excellent compared to 12 percent last year at this time.
