High sorghum yields achieved in 2022, despite drought

The 2022 National Sorghum Producers Yield Contest unveiled some impressive numbers despite drought in key growing areas.

The highest yield of 245 bushels per acre was achieved by Winsome Farms of Stanton County Kansas in the Western Irrigated category, one of the top ten yields ever recorded in the contest.

Illinois farmer Allen Walters of Clark County secured the top yield in the Eastern Dryland Tillage category at 184 bpa. He tells Brownfield he’s only been growing sorghum for a few years, but this season proved the crop likes dry weather.

“I didn’t really think we had a bumper crop. We thought it would be far off from last year with the lack of rainfall, but it ended up only being half a bushel off from last year, which was totally unexpected.” Walters says his goal next season is to exceed 200 bushels per acre.
