Indiana corn, soybean leaders pleased with US-Japan deal

Leaders with the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Growers Association are pleased the US and Japan have signed a limited trade deal.

President Trump and Japanese Prime Minster Abe signed the deal on the sidelines of the United Nations’ General Assembly meeting Wednesday.

Japan has agreed to cut or eliminate tariffs on corn, beef, pork, wheat, cheese, and other commodities.

Indiana Corn Growers Association President Sarah Delbecq says farmers must maintain foreign markets to remain competitive. She says the deal with Japan strengthens the relationship between Hoosier corn farmers and the important trading partner.

Phil Ramsey, a Shelbyville farmer with the Indiana Soybean Association, says the deal with Japan is also beneficial to livestock producers.

The Trump administration says this is first phase of a more comprehensive agreement that will be negotiated with Japan.
