Investment firm steps into regional seed business

A Michigan investment company has started the process of acquiring small, regional seed companies.

Tillerman Seeds CEO James Sheppard says he believes there is a significant opportunity to consolidate small seed companies around the country with owners ready to retire who want to ensure the legacy they built continues.

The company recently finalized its first acquisition of mid-Michigan based DF Seeds, an independent supplier of soybean and wheat varieties. DF Seeds will continue to serve its more than 400 farmers throughout the region under the same brand.

Tillerman Seeds says they intend to purchase small seed companies with an established regional presence or specialty products and operate acquired companies as standalone entities which will also collaborate on research and development.
