Iowa ag department statement on mystery seeds from China

People in several states have received unsolicited packages of seed that may be from China.

A spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Agriculture says they are aware that some individuals in Iowa have received those packages. She says they are waiting on guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and then will issue more information.

In the meantime, the department advises anyone receiving such a package to not open the seed packet, plant the seed, or destroy the seed.

  • We have received several packs of these “mystery seeds” from China…we have not opened the packets nor planted any of them…all are still in original packaging…we would like to give these seed packets to proper authorities to be disposed of properly…what do you advise?

    • Charles–If you’re in Iowa, call 515-281-5321. Otherwise you should contact your state agriculture department or your state office for USDA APHIS.
