Iowa ethanol producer fined by EPA for alleged Clean Air Act violations

A bioethanol producer in Menlo, Iowa has been fined by the Environmental Protection Agency for allegedly violating the federal Clean Air Act.

The U.S. EPA says it will collect a nearly $90,000 penalty from POET Biorefining for failing to properly operate the facility’s scrubber, which is designed to limit releases of volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants. The violation allegedly occurred in 2022 and the EPA says the company has since corrected the issue.

The agency says the Menlo facility is a “major air emission source” that creates biofuels through fermentation of corn sugars.
