Iowa farmer pleased with recent snowfall totals

A western Iowa farmer says he hopes some recent winter precipitation has helped his soils.

Kevin Ross tells Brownfield his area has received a favorable amount of snow this month. “We started out awful dry and it didn’t feel much like winter really until the last three weeks or so.”

He says the moisture could help early planted crops this spring. “I think it definitely gives a little bit of optimism for moisture levels. This time of year, you kind of wonder how much of that’s really going to soak in. We did have a nice inch and a half rain there in December before the frost really set in here that I would say a lot of that probably soaked in.”

But Ross says he’s not getting too comfortable. “A lot of folks are sitting behind in a lot of dry areas yet.”

He farms near Underwood in Pottawattamie County.
