Iowa farmer says 2023 rains came at the right time

A southwest Iowa farmer says some timely rains were the key to his successful 2023 growing season.

Jeff Jorgenson tells Brownfield conditions were favorable on his farm despite the surrounding area being abnormally dry. “We’re kind of the doughnut hole of getting moisture right here. We had more rains than farms that weren’t too far away from us. We had some record yields on some farms.”

But he says there were some challenges getting this year’s crop out of the ground. “We had wind, we dried up at times, we had some issues with pests, but that’s farming. And we keep working to manage those and do the best we can.”

Jorgenson raises corn and soybeans and owns a cow/calf operation near Sidney.
