Iowa farmer says flattened corn is disappointing, remains optimistic

Southwest Iowa farmer Duane Aistrope says he’s still assessing crop damage from a derecho that swept through his area on Thursday.

“There’s not a lot of green snap in my fields,” he said. “I’ve heard that over by Interstate 29 on the western side of my county that the corn did snap off pretty bad over there. It’s probably going to start smelling like silage in that part of the country before too long.”

He tells Brownfield the flattened corn is disappointing, but he could still have a decent harvest.

“It’s definitely going to be an interesting harvest,” he said. “We haven’t had any downed corn for several years. Harvest will be slow.”

Aistrope farms near Randolph in Fremont County.
