July milk production up 1.9% on year
The USDA says milk production in the top 23 states during July 2017 was 17.189 billion pounds.
That’s up 1.9% on the year, with per cow yield of 1,969 pounds, up 21 pounds on the year, and a 72,000 head rise in the U.S. herd, to 8.730 million head. California was the biggest producer and the largest herd, followed by Wisconsin, and Colorado had the highest yield, followed by Michigan.
Milk production this year has been ahead of last year every month, except for February.
Production, yield, and herd numbers for Brownfield states:
Illinois: Production: 158 million pounds, up 1.3% from July 2016; yield of 1,700 pounds per cow, up 40 from a year ago; herd of 93,000 head, down 1,000 from last year
Indiana: Production: 348 million pounds, up 1.2% from July 2016; yield of 1,870 pounds per cow, unchanged from a year ago; herd of 186,000 head, up 2,000 from last year
Iowa: Production: 434 million pounds, up 2.1% from July 2016; yield of 2,000 pounds per cow, up 15 from a year ago; herd of 217,000 head, up 3,000 from last year
Michigan: Production: 959 million pounds, up 2.9% from July 2016; yield of 2,245 pounds per cow, up 25 from a year ago; herd of 427,000 head, up 7,000 from last year
Minnesota: Production: 840 million pounds, up 3.1% from July 2016; yield of 1,835 pounds per cow, up 70 from a year ago; herd of 458,000 head, down 4,000 from last year
Ohio: Production: 469 million pounds, down 0.4% from July 2016; yield of 1,790 pounds per cow, up 20 from a year ago; herd of 262,000 head, down 4,000 from last year
South Dakota: Production: 224 million pounds, up 4.2% from July 2016; yield of 1,895 pounds per cow, up 25 from a year ago; herd of 118,000 head, up 3,000 from last year
Wisconsin: Production: 2.588 billion pounds, up 0.7% from July 2016; yield of 2,025 pounds per cow, up 15 from a year ago; herd of 1.278 million head, unchanged from last year
