Livestock barely hanging on

While parts of the Midwest have been getting too much rain, ranchers in New Mexico are trying to hold on, but Mike Corn of Roswell, New Mexico says it’s becoming more and more difficult.

“We’re fighting the third year of a drought, it’s just been terrible, we’ve now been on seven inches of rain since October 2010, that’s a long time, we just got two inches two weeks ago, so prior to that it was just five inches, since October 2010,” said Corn. “It’s doom and gloom in our part of the country, most of the people have had to sell out because there’s no grass left.

With the two inches of rain in the past three weeks, Corn says long range, they’re hoping the drought is about to break, if not, he says there won’t be any livestock left in New Mexico.

Corn serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the American Sheep Industry (ASI). He was in Ohio over the weekend attending Ohio Sheep Day.
