McDonald’s highlights Michigan ingredients

McDonald’s is recognizing the importance of Michigan as part of Food and Agriculture Month in the state.

The restaurant chain sourced more than $142 million of product from Michigan in 2020 including apples, beef, blueberries, corn, eggs, lettuce, milk, pork, pickles, soybeans, and sugar.

George Quackenbush with the Michigan Beef Industry Commission tells Brownfield that includes 11 million pounds of beef which he says is certified through the checkoff’s Beef Quality Assurance Program.

“It’s all about the care and feeding of the animals, and how we handle them,” he shares.

Quackenbush says the pandemic had brought even more emphasis on local and regional sourcing which is bringing new opportunities for the food and ag industry.

“It gives us an opportunity to have a dialog and build a relationship with the consumer, and really help our more urban consumers that are less familiar with agriculture,” he says.

Tuesday McDonald’s honored local suppliers at a tasting event in the Saginaw area.
